Have waned a copy of this book for years...finally got it through eBay, and will never regret it. Learning to checker a gunstock is much easier if one has this book of instructions. I like the author's great humor, which one discovers in the very first few pages. The instructions are clear and simple, and more than complete. He even gives instructions on the making of ones own checkering tools. The book offers advanced instructions for easy- to- complicated designs and for carving patterns in addiion to the various stages of difficult checkering designs. It is my belief that one of average talent can become a skilled gunstock checkerer if he follows the instructional steps in the pages of this book, which is recognized as a classic within the the gunstock trade. This is an outstanding book to introduce checkering and to a lesser extent gunstock carving... The author goes out of his way to ensure that you can build your own fixtures and tools. This kind of knowledge is priceless. I picked this as my first introduction to checkering (something I've wanted to do for years) and it has all the information I needed to do some very nice work.

This book is a composition of the great artisans of the post WWII generation. They write about how they choose techniques appropriate for a particular firearm and use. This book is set up as a bunch of short stories centered around a piece which is highlighted with pattern and tools used to obtain a particular look. Some tools were hand made and they may explain how they made these tools many of which are now sold commercially. The only short point of the book is the pictures are in black and white and sometimes not all that clear. More illustrations would be of great help. This book is inspirational for the beginner but has more application benefits for the seasoned checkerer.
I collect books about gun-related topics and hunting. This book is the classic on the subject of gunstock checkering, and Monty Kennedy was one of the masters of this art. The book has many full-size checkering and carving patterns done by most of the great names in the field. I had found a copy several years ago in a book store, but the dust jacket was dog-eared and the pages had some wear. When I saw this book listed and read about the excellent condition, I knew I had to have it for my own library. I bought it, and it is just what I was looking for. I gave my previous copy to my gunstock maker, and he was very excited about acquiring it!
