Armored Core is a game series I have enjoyed since the early 2000's as a young adult. I was first introduced to the series by my cousin around 2003 and was able to catch bits and pieces of the games since then, leading up to 2006-ish when Armored Core 4 was released. After I took my eyes away from Halo 3, I was sucked into the demo available on Xbox live at the time. I played the demo to completion and sought out a copy for myself. Since then I've been an even bigger fan of the series, despite my occasional failure to play the original PlayStation titles with any level of proficiency. Armored Core is a title which often feel unappreciated by gamers I've encountered, although that may be due to the 'type' of gamers I most often encounter in my everyday life. Anyway, I would reckon that the reason for it being a less popular game than many others nowadays, is due in part to the games admittedly bad controls. The original PlayStation games are very well constructed and well-balanced (usually) but the controls can make the entire game unplayable for people new to the game, or otherwise unfamiliar to not being able to use analog sticks for movement and aim. Not to say it is bad enough to be game-breaking, just off-putting and somewhat unintuitive. Even without the use of analog sticks, the game could have made better use of the buttons at its command. However, Armored core is one of the few games on the PlayStation I've seen to allow for near complete rearrangement of its controls. This feature is, thankfully, continued throughout every sequel in the franchise. The game itself includes an interesting and immersive story with gameplay that is fun, challenging and stimulating. For anyone not put off by its controls, and willing to practice or buy alternative remotes (flight sticks), the game presents a difficult yet rewarding experience that the player can take with them through to the next game, as many Armored Core titles feature the ability to transfer saves from the previous games. I would recommend this, and any Armored Core titles (Yes, even V and Verdict day, just a little less so) to anyone who enjoys an intelligent, challenging gaming experience. And anyone not afraid to invest a little time and money into a bit of older hardware. -W527Read full review
