I am, and have been for many years, a Billy Fury fan. I have most of Fury's releases on vinyl and I am trying to find everything on CD/DVD. There are often quite a lot of offers on E-BAY that enable me to do this, but some items are expensive - especially the rarer items. This particular CD is both affordable and highly collectable! Enough about me and my 'wants'- lets talk about the music! This compilation album traces the most successful period of Fury's career, from 1959 through to 1964. Of those peolple that have heard of Billy Fury, most think that he was a balladeer - aiming his music at a predominantly teenage (female) audience. To those of us that are more familiar with his music this is not so! Billy's early releases were pure 'Rockablly' style Rock'n'Roll - fast-paced, ... I am, and have been for many years, a Billy Fury fan. I have most of Fury's releases on vinyl and I am trying to find everything on CD/DVD. To those of us that are more familiar with his music this is not so! Billy's early releases were pure 'Rockablly' style Rock'n'Roll - fast-paced, thumping, danceable, and ENGLISH! (Mostly self-penned, unusual for the time especially for English artists!). Billy continued to release rocking numbers through the sixties, quite successfully considering the sudden impact of Beat Groups and the Mersey Sound. The Rocker is an excellent collection of rocking music from the early sixties and will appeal to all who enjoy the music from this period of time, and especially to Fury fans. If you collect music of this genre your collection is missing an absolute gem if you do not have this CD in it! The opening track is 'you're having the last dance with me', in answer to The Drifters song 'Save the last dance for me', before moving on to the self-penned 'Don't knock upon my door', a classic British Rock'n'Roll song. The CD continues with a mixture of cover versions (some classic, some rare) along with tracks written by Billy Fury(also using the aliases William Wilberforce, and Wilbur) - see if you can tell which songs were written by Billy Fury, and those written by classic American writers (such as Pomus/Shuman, Leiber/Stoller, Eddie Fontaine, Hank Snow, Chuck Berry, Etc.). The final (20th) track is the ELVIS classic 'Thats all right, mama' - itself a cover from the old Blues shouter Arthur 'BigBoy' Cruddup - gets an amazing workover that includes a fairground organ sound! Starting slowly, getting faster and faster, until reaching crescendo! Absolutely fantastic!!! (And its recorded live - so you can feel the audience appreciation). In between Billy proves the versatility in his styles - from the haunting 'Don't jump' (suicide genre), through to 'The Twist kid'(twist), including: Rockabilly ('My Advice'); Country Rock ('I'm moving on'); Blues ('Kansas City'); Gentle Love songs ('Thats Love', and 'Collette')and classic sixties beat music ('Nothin shakin', 'The hippy, hippy shake', and 'Glad all over'). The sound reproduction is excellent, very clear, even the four tracks recorded in front of a live audience. Overall this collection captures the sixties sounds in one amazing CD, and must remain a 'must-buy' for general music collectors, people who want to re-live the sixties sounds, and especially Billy Fury Fans!!!! As a single-artist collection it is among the best of this genre, but it also stand-up in comparison to multi-artist sixties collections. A quality CD. This is a British Rock'n'Roll Classic, and I am very pleased to have it in my collection.

BILLY FURY- THE ROCKER
ALL OF THE TRACKS ARE GOOD , HOWEVER THE MERSEYBEAT PERIOD IS REFLECTED IN SOME OF THE TRACKS AND THE LIVE TRACKS DEMOSTRATE JUST HOW GOOD BILLY WAS ON STAGE, MAYBE DECCA HAVE SOME ALTERNATE TAKES IN THE VAULTS .
