About this product

Product Information

'I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...' writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up '1992', the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerising tales from Stephen King, linked by the theme of retribution. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife Arlette proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness. In 'Big Driver', a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger is along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself. 'Fair Extension', the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Harry Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment. When her husband of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It's a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends 'A Good Marriage'. Like DIFFERENT SEASONS and FOUR PAST MIDNIGHT, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, FULL DARK, NO STARS proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.

  • Wonderful book, live the Stephen King Experience *****

This is a wonderful book, and I would truely recommend it.Stephen King likes to tease his readers with the prospect of retirement but, at 64 he only seems to be speeding up. In the summer of 2010, America’s most enduring popular novelist celebrated seven years as a columnist with Entertainment Weekly: this autumn, he launches both a new comics collaboration with the writer Scott Snyder, American Vampire, and a new collection of novellas, Full Dark, No Stars, an unfashionable literary form with which he has traditionally enjoyed greater than usual success. He also recently announced that he is writing a sequel to his classic novel The Shining, suggesting strong resistance from whatever shadowy muse lurks in his mental basement to any attempt at handing in the pen.

  • Fabulous - STEPHEN KING at his very best !

This is a classic ! It is s must for all Stephen King fans. All four short stories are enjoyable in a dark way - a very apt title. The stories are very varied- ranging from a tale about a farm in rural Nebraska (1922) in the 1920s- to a modern story of revenge after a violent attack on a young woman(Big Driver). There is a chilling tale in "Fair Extension" about the price of jealousy and its consequences. The final story (A Good Marriage) asks whether it is ever possible to know someone completely - even after years of marriage there may still be some surprises in store - and some you would rather not know! This is a quartet of masterful tales which may make you check out those seemingly innocent boxes in the garage - or then again perhaps they are best left unopened ! Innocence is bliss?
