About this product
Product Information
This is the story of one of the biggest catastrophes in British naval history. Yet, because of wartime conditions, the explosion and rapid sinking of HMS Dasher , in the Clyde estuary on 27th March 1943, was not announced until the end of hostilities in 1945. The casualty list of 379 crew is second only to the sinking of HMS Royal Oak in scale. Dasher was originally a cargo ship and was hastily converted in America to an aircraft carrier, in order to help escort vital North Atlantic convoys during heavy German U-boat activity. She was leased to the British navy, but there were doubts about her suitability. Structural faults and safety problems were evident. The explosion took place between the town of Ardrossan and the Isle of Arran. Steele, an Ardrossan man, has collected a comprehensive record of the event, including a laser-scan of the wreck on the sea bed. He also presents copies of the official Board of Enquiry documents concerning the loss. Accounts and original photographs from survivors, eyewitnesses and rescue services are all presented in this memorial volume, together with the memories of the bereaved relatives who were - at the time - afforded the bare minimum of information.
