Must be seen!
OK, first things first, why did i buy it? Well, after watching the Sarah Michelle Gellar re-hash which i found as scary as a field full of happy hoppy bunny rabbits i wanted to see the 'real' thing. Despite having the same director - Shimizu Takashi - & being produced by Sam Raimi the US version isn't a patch on the original. It's better made, creepier, has far more suspense & eerie atmosphere, more shocks - more everything! Ju-On (The Grudge) is explained clearly which means you understand why the characters that are killed are killed - unlike the US version which doesn't fully explain exactly what Ju-On is & meant i was a bit at a loss as to why certain characters were killed. At 88 minutes it's not too long & it's pretty much non-stop action. The film revolves around 5 central ... OK, first things first, why did i buy it? The film revolves around 5 central characters & is divided into 5 stories each devoted to one of the characters & why they are Ju-on'ed (i made that word up so don't look for it in the dictionary). All of the stories tie-in together nicely & don't jump around confusingly like some films made in this style have done. If you buy the 2 disc special collectors edition (as i did) the nice people in DVD making land have given it dual language format - which means for those of us whose lingual ability is limited to English and/or Rubbish this version offers the options of English subtitles or dubbing. Watching a film subtitled or dubbed is a personal preference thing. Personally i prefer subtitles but i did also watch it dubbed - & here comes the only criticism of the film! I don't know who did the voices for the dubbing but they wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes on The Archers! To say it's pretty awful might be a bit harsh... actually no, it's pretty awful. Some of the characters dubbing really isn't as convincing as it should be. It didn't spoil the film but it did take me a little while to stop thinking about it! I'd definately recommend watching it subtitled but it does mean you have to watch it... taking your eyes off the screen to find that peanut M&M you just dropped might mean having to hit the pause or rewind button. At least with the subtitles you get the benefit of the 'real' emotions in the characters voices. In any case, whether you watch it subtitled, dubbed - or are lucky enough to speak Japanese - i say watch it. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Against Hollywood
Well you want me to be honest!!! This was the first Japanese horror film i ever see. About 3 Years ago. Because at the time i was and still and am into Martial Arts films. Like Hero, House Of Flying Daggers etc. Anyway i heard about this film the Grudge. The Hollywood one and wasnt to interested in watching it. Any my friend said that this was not the original and that there was a japanese original. So i ask my friend to get it for me. he did the next day. Now i did not no what to expect, but as i have a lot of Martial arts films i have seen my fair share of Subtitled movies. So there i am at home watching the Grudge. I had to turn it off about half way through. And i had trouble sleeping i couldnt even look at the dvd i had it tucked away in the corner. So about maybe a month later i ... Fantastic film!
I'm so glad that I've finally been able to add this great film to my growing collection of horror films. I first saw this film about a year ago-and it really creeped me out! (which means it's a successful horror film-it's very difficult to truly creep me out like this film did) Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find it in any of the shops around the area where I lived, which was very disappointing seeing as I considered this film as one of the best Japanese horror films I've ever seen. So, when I saw it up for sale on eBay, I knew I had to have it! It was just as fantastic as the first time I saw it. However, there weren't many extras, which was a shame-I would've liked to have seen some more of what went on behind the scenes. Overall, though, this film is absolutely brilliant.I'm so glad that I've finally been able to add this great film to my growing collection of horror films. The Grudge - A real horror
I have seen many re-makes of great movies so when I spotted Ju-On the original Japanese version, (at a great price)I thought a chance to see this movie without Sarah Michelle Gellar who give a flat performance in the American version- Sadly the generic description of the Japanese version is as far as it got-I received the NTSC American edition, so the email I got from eBay asking to write a review- "What do you like, love, or dislike about it? Why did you decide to buy it?" Japanese grudge.better than Hollywood!
I saw the film before it came out in the UK,and it was refreshing to see a film that wasn't mainstream "Hollywood".Japan and Korea have started making some excellent films,especially in the horror genre.Hong Kong and China have been doing good cinema for years,but mainly kung fu.This film ba little confusing at times,and thats my main critisism.I decided to buy it as im expanding my dvd collection,and i think this will be an excellent part of it! Also its to show my friends that its much better than the hollywood version with Sarah Geller.(which is almost exaclty the same,except more non asian people and poorer acting!) this film will make you jump and prove that hiding under the covers wont save you!If you like the Ring trilogy,then this film is for you. The second film of this title is ...
