This movie has a bit of everything!
I saw Bull Durham on tv years ago and really enjoyed it. I searched for it on dvd in local stores etc from time to time, with no luck, so I was really pleased to be able to buy it on ebay. The movie is set against a baseball backdrop. I'm not a sports fan at all but enjoyed the way the game was portrayed. It is an 18 so as you might expect, it has some bad language and adult scenes although they're quite tame in comparison to some recent releases. There is a thread of humour and a sizzle of attraction throughout. I felt it to be a bit dated. As it was filmed in 1988, that's understandable. But the storyline is fun once you become acquainted with all the characters and is well worth a second viewing. This is not a chick flick as such but has a feelgood ending. Annie Savoy (Susan ... She has her standards, never sleeping with a player batting less than 250. The lucky one has a lot to learn and Annie takes pride in her work. This season the field has been narrowed down to two candidates, Ebby "Nuke" Latoosh (Tim Robbins) and Crash Davis ( Kevin Costner). Nuke has a great throwing arm but no control - in any department! Crash, on the other hand is a veteran player with all the right moves - on and off the field!

THE best baseball movie with a lot more to offer
The film deals with the pressures encountered by players at AAA level baseball - the level just below the Major leagues. However it is much more than the run of the mill sport movie. It deals with the relationship between the fading but experienced catcher, played well by Kevin Costner, brought to the team to develop the skills of a promising but erratic young pitcher. Simultaneously, the relationships develop between the delectable baseball groupie played brilliantly by Susan Sarandon and both of the baseball players. Sports movies often only appeal to men but here we have a film with genuine feminine appeal with a genuine comic strand interlaced: one piece of advice offered to the young pitcher is to 'breathe through his eyelids' as he pitches. Kevin Costner's pitcher character reveals that, just once, he was called up for two glorious weeks to the 'Show' illustrates the drive for success that rules their lives. A satisfying film that can be enjoyed by both sexes although probably not for family viewing. Susan Sarandon sizzles.
