Follow-up album that tops its brilliant predecessor.
I bought this immediately after seeing the band play live, and was blown away by the album. In concert, they are a formidable proposition, driven by human dynamo drummer Patrick Mahoney, piling rhythm upon rhythm, beat upon beat, giving your feet no choice but to surrender, and causing your brain to lock into the grumpy imprecations, whoops and hollers of scruffy, charismatic frontman James Murphy, who plays and sings the majority of parts on this mighty record and IS, in essence, LCD Soundsystem. The band's self-titled debut is a wonderful album, but is outshone by Sound Of Silver, which completely succeeds in capturing through studio means the thrill of LCD's live performance. Those not yet familiar with this record may already have heard the single, "North American Scum," a startlngly ... I bought this immediately after seeing the band play live, and was blown away by the album. Those not yet familiar with this record may already have heard the single, "North American Scum," a startlngly clever and infectious response to the widespread anti-US sentiment which has arguably developed over the past few years, written from the perspective of an ordinary American citizen by Murphy, an extraordinary one. It's worth noting that North American Scum, included here, has been named pop single of the year by Uncut magazine in its Review of 2007, and that Sound Of Silver is the same music monthly's album of the year. Meanwhile, Mojo magazine has voted Sound Of Silver among its top 5 albums of 2007, and declared "All My Friends", a key song on the album, to be its track of the year. These accolades are rendered even more remarkable in light of the context in which they are awarded: Mojo and Uncut are highly regarded rock journals read in large part by old guitar, bass and drum-loving dinosaurs (such as me), while Sound Of Silver is, if it can be categorised, a dance album. However, the record's genius lies in its seamless melding of dance rhythms and a distinctly New York sound with rock instruments: electric guitar and bass with synths; programmed beats with the upfront pounding of drums and hiss of cymbals. The overall effect is mesmerising, a highly intelligent mesh of dance, rock and pop which demands to be heard, reflecting its influences - David Bowie, Talking Heads, Blondie, New Order - but subsuming them and taking on a personality which is entirely its own. One track on the album manages to sound remarkably like The Killers yet remains resolutely a track by LCD Soundsystem; but don't take my word for it - give yourself a treat and wrap your ears around this fabulous piece of work, the sooner the better. Life's too short not to.
