About this product

Product Information

A huge novel that follows five families through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for votes for women. It is 1911. The Coronation Day of King George V. The Williams, a Welsh coal-mining family, is linked by romance and enmity to the Fitzherberts, aristocratic coal-mine owners. Lady Maud Fitzherbert falls in love with Walter von Ulrich, a spy at the German Embassy in London. Their destiny is entangled with that of an ambitious young aide to U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and to two orphaned Russian brothers, whose plans to emigrate to America fall foul of war, conscription and revolution. In a plot of unfolding drama and intriguing complexity, FALL OF GIANTS moves seamlessly from Washington to St Petersburg, from the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty.

    Great read

This is a long but very interesting book. It keeps you on your toes as there are many characters to follow. I like how it flows from one family to the other but keeps you connected to the story line. Good historical detail, learning curve, keeps you looking for more and can't wait to see what comes next. If you were not well informed about first world war and the involvement of Russia and America then you will be by the end and fascinated to know more. I love history especially when it is told in this dramatic way.

  • Most critical review

Needs a lot of concentration and a good memory

I have enjoyed Ken Follett's books historically interesting giving lots of detail about the lives of people, conditions etc. I wanted to learn more about what led up to WW1 and the affect on the people at that time. I found this book to be a tome! describing from Chapter to Chapter different apparently unrelated groups in incredible detail and quite difficult to follow. I am about half way through and tempted to give it up, but things and people are coming together and am persuaded to stick with it!

  • Fantastic saga

Brilliant writing and an unputdownable story following events leading to the aoutbreak of World War I through to the mid 1920s.and it’s effect on two families of different social class. I can’t wait to read the next book in the trilogy.

This was our chosen Book Club read for July, not my usual type of book but the historical facts as well as the impact on different families kept me interested.
