New York Times - ...A slick, riveting, viscerally scary film....Played with disarming ease and sharp, frightening urgency by [Robbins]...
Additional Information
Adrian Lyne's JACOB'S LADDER moves in time and space between Vietnam and New York with hallucinatory force. Something bad happened on the Mekong Delta, on October 6, 1971, and it is still affecting war veteran Jacob (Tim Robbins) in Brooklyn as he attempts to live a normal life with coworker and girlfriend Jezzie (Elizabeth Pena). Louis (Danny Aiello), an understanding chiropractor, tries to help him cope with his nightmarish visions--some of which occur at night, while others intrude into his daily life. When Jacob gets a call from Paul (Pruitt Taylor Vince), who was with him in Vietnam, it seems that Jacob is not alone in his visions. The film offers impressive and compelling performances by Pena, Aiello (no ordinary chiropractor), and Ving Rhames and Eriq La Salle (the latter of ER) as Jacob's comrades from Vietnam. Macaulay Culkin appears uncredited as Jacob's young son, Gabe. Director Lyne also guides an unerring interpretation of Bruce Joel Rubin's screenplay in Robbins's powerfully restless, searingly searching performance as Jacob; brilliant editing additionally rounds out this engrossing, disturbing film. JACOB'S LADDER is a jolting experience that is not easily forgotten.

A syringe filled with unnamed chemicals

Adrian Lyne's, Jacob's Ladder, is the freakishly twisted tale of Vietnam war vet, Jacob Singer, who, after being ambushed in Viet Cong by an agent orange assault, returns to his home town in New York City only to suffer from extreme post-traumatic hallucinations. The hallucinations become increasingly bizarre as Jacob struggles to overcome the painful memories of his son (played by Macaulay Culkin) who was killed while he was in the war. Lyne uses seemingly ordinary images to evoke the fear and sickness that Jacob suffers with, from vapid shower curtains and naked spines, to the grotesque slab of meat inside a refrigerator—all induce a sense of estrangement and insanity. Later he uses more horror-styled elements: coiled reptilian tails, saber-tooth's, convulsing heads built on paint bucket ...

  • Bad title-does not tempt you to see film.

A very original story, which does not reveal the answer until the end. I sat riveted. The 3 stars are excellent but I would say that the film has been put together so well, so I was wondering right up to the end what the solution was.

  • Jacobs Ladder

A Great Alternate Horror Movie, this movie is worth then one more watch, the chartacters are intriguing, it is a different visualization of horror which goes in to different areas and the film has plenty of twists, it may not be the best horror movie, it may not be every bodys cup of tea, but it is very dark, it is evil tale to tell, and this is the best bit it has one of the scariest scenes ever seen in a horror movie

  • Excellent movie.

Truly classic scary Vietnam movie. Great storyline. Typical government plot to sabotage their own troops and using them as guinea pigs. Great acting.
