    Brett Easton Ellis who wrote the novel on which this film is loosely based, has a habit of taking characters most people would like to be, and turning them into people we have no sympathy for. This film opens at a graduation ceremony where we see rich college kids Clay (Andrew McCarthy), Julian (Robert Downey Jnr) and Clay's girlfriend Blair (Jami Gertz) celebrate success and be optimistic about the future. Then it cuts to Clay alone in his room at university taking an unexpected phone call from Blair begging him to come home to LA for the winter break. He spends much of the film going to parties and meeting his former friends and trying to sort out his relationship with Blair.     bret easton ellis is one of me favarote authors and i did not know if the book would work as a film but i was not dissapointed. the film is a gritty hard hitting 80s film full of drugs and booze great acting and good cast.
