Quirky hallmarks
Dark comedy about a middle-of-the-road Jewish professor whose life suddenly goes pear-shaped. His wife wants a divorce, someone is writing nasty letters about him to his boss, a mysterious record club is hounding him for payments, his steamily sexy new neighbour sunbathes in the nude, his daughter wants a nose job, his son is getting stoned instead of preparing for his bar mitzvah and his brother hogs the bathroom ("I'll be out in a minute!").This film has some of the quirky hallmarks of a Coen Brothers' movie, and some of the characters are very well-drawn, but it is too, too slow. I'm not sure I agree with the 3 recommendations shown on the front cover.
I bought this film because I enjoy Coen Brothers films. And this is fairly typical of their work. Life for Larry goes from fine to bad and then to worse. The humour in this film I would think is very Jewish and certainly very subtle. I'm not sure I agree with the 3 recommendations shown on the front cover, but it is an enjoyable film. Personally, I prefer Fargo and The Big Lebowski.

A seriously poor film.
With out a doubt the coen brothers poorest film to date. This film doesnt go anywhere,there are no memorable charecters and to sit through a coen brothers film without laughing once is unheard of. Based on this and burn after reading i think the coens are running on empty and i doubt they will ever do anything truly magical ever again.
