About this product

Product Information

This novel is a trenchant expose of the frequently isolated, intellectually stagnant and emotionally-starved conditions under which many governesses worked in the mid-19th century. This is a deeply personal novel written from the author's own experience and as such Agnes Grey has a power and poignancy which mark it out as a landmark work of literature dealing with the social and moral evolution of English society during the last century. AUTHOR: Anne Bronte (1820-1849), the sister of Charlotte and Emily, was the youngest of six children and is best known for her novels 'Agnes Grey' and 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'.

  • An interesting and thought provoking read

Not the best of the Bronte novels but extremely well-written and still an enjoyable read. The book focuses on a time when only those in society who had money were regarded as worthy. Having intelligence and ability counted for little. Makes you realise that we live in better times today,

  • A brilliant book by an equally brilliant, yet underrated, writer.

I absolutely loved this book, I can't understand why Ann Bronte failed to get the recognition she deserved, I suppose having two equally talented sisters maybe put her in the shade, but I think I might prefer her writing, although I love them all. She picks up on things that we all witness in life, but I've seldom seen anyone pin point it so accurately, and with such style and grace. I think she was a beautiful soul.
