The End of Evangelion
This is hands down one of, if not the best anime film ever made, obviously opinion based, but with epic visuals, story and a confusing but gorgeous ending to the big wrap up of the anime. This emotional trip is filled with epic fights, violent scenes, religious imagery and much more. This awesome conclusion to the original TV series is indeed one of the best anime movies of all time. Including deeper meanings of love, religion, family issues, relationships, and being human. This is why it is in my opinion one of the greatest anime movies of all time.This is hands down one of, if not the best anime film ever made, obviously opinion based, but with epic visuals, story and a confusing but gorgeous ending to the big wrap up of the anime. For those who loved the Evangelion anime series The End of Evangelion is essential viewing. Many of us were left dazed and confused by the end of the series and I'm certainly no different. Once you've seen this you'll finally 'get' it. All the characters and voice actors return for this feature length outing of stunning battles, sexual innuendo, parental desertion and Biblical folklore. With all the Angels destroyed what is left for NERV and it's staff to do? What is to become of the giant biomechanical fighting machines grown from The Angels known as the Evangelions? Once dubbed mankind's only hope of survival against attack from the beings known as The Angels will the Evas now become the latest threat of a humanity left distraught and scattered by the so-called Second Impact? And ... For those who loved the Evangelion anime series The End of Evangelion is essential viewing. Many of us were left dazed and confused by the end of the series and I'm certainly no different. Once you've seen this you'll finally 'get' it. At the end of the series it was revealed that Rei was not in fact human, Asuka was comatose after losing battles against the Angels again and again and Shinji's mental state was more fragile than that of any other 14 year old boy on the planet. What will become of The Chosen Children and their guardians? The answers to all of these questions and more are contained within Neon Genesis Evangelion - The End of Evangelion. With battles better than any seen in the series, stunning animation and twists and turns around every corner The End of Evangelion is just the thing to finish your collection of what is widely heralded the best anime series of all time. From the animators at Production I.G.(Ghost in the Shell) and Studio GAINAX comes the final 2 part installment of Neon Genesis. Intended to replace episodes 25 and 26 of the series this feature length presentation answers many questions raised by the series and also raises some new ones. Superbly true to the original series director Hideaki Anno has done himself and his team proud in this visually spectacular outing. This DVD also has a commentary by (English Language Director and Voice of Rei Ayanami) Amanda Winn Lee which will bring things about the film into view which you may have failed to notice before and will also help you to understand some of the visual imagery used to tease the subconscience. The DVD also includes the Japanese version and different surround sound options. Once again, this is absolutely essential viewing for anyone who enjoyed the series or indeed anime or manga in general.

Great expectations dashed.
We purchased this as the series ending was really abrupt due to funding shortages - this was supposed to be 'the way it was meant to end'. In all honesty we were quite dissapointed as this 'ending' was even more abstract and random than the 1st one. As with the rest of the series, this film is loaded with religous sybolism and references, especially Christian vs New Age. Where in the original TV series this is quite subtle in mostly in the background where they could be mistaken for random coincedenses, here it is quite garish and in your face. Again not something for children to watch due to violence and nudity. Also, as this was originally for the Japanese market, there are quite a lot of cultural behaviour and references which dont translate and sadly fall by ... These could have facilitated an explanation of a wildly surealistic chain of events which are never fully explained to the viewer. The animation is neither amazing nor ground breaking, and the protagonist - Shinji - shows no charater development at all, even though he goes through very difficult situations. This was one of the most dissapointing points of the movie for me. I could not recommend this movie to anyone but die hard fans of the series - the only thing which saves this movie from complete and utter flopdom, is the amazing fight scene between Oska and a pack of rival Evas. Not an elegant movie - 2/5.
