About this product

Product Information

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry the troubled and bitter Rasheed, who is thirty years her senior. Nearly two decades later, in a climate of growing unrest, tragedy strikes fifteen-year-old Laila, who must leave her home and join Mariam's unhappy household. Laila and Mariam are to find consolation in each other, their friendship to grow as deep as the bond between sisters, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. With the passing of time comes Taliban rule over Afghanistan, the streets of Kabul loud with the sound of gunfire and bombs, life a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, the women's endurance tested beyond their worst imaginings. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism. In the end it is love that triumphs over death and destruction. A Thousand Splendid Suns is an unforgettable portrait of a wounded country and a deeply moving story of family and friendship. It is a beautiful, heart-wrenching story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely bond and an indestructible love.

    Excellent value.

The book was second hand so I expected a little wear and tear. I was pleased with its condition. The price and the speed with which it arrived was excellent. I haven’t started reading it yet but the synopsis sounds just my sort of thing as I love to be transported to other lands and cultures.

  • Most critical review

Excellent except for the continuous assertion of Muslim stereotypes.

Okay I am really in between two worlds when it comes to book, as a practicing Muslim this book can be very daunting to read and makes me as a Muslim wonder what the true intents of Khaled Hosseini is in writing this book. It's difficult to tell. He certainly doesn't have all that much of a clue of Islam and it's teachings and hence should have refrained from enforcing his views on certain topics in the book on which he has no knowledge of in Islam and these examples are manifested in this book. As controversial as this book was from a Muslim perspective, I will not walk away saying this book was a load of rubbish in terms of how it negatively portrayed Islam, but that rather it gave me a newfound level of endurance in life for all things to come and where I thought I knew what suffering ...

  • Incredible book, absolute must read!

I chose this book to read on holiday and absolutely couldn't put it down. Very entertaining and so well written, with lots of surprises in the plot. More importantly, however, I learned a lot about the history of violence and war in Afghanistan and how this has affected every day people. As a woman in particular, this book was very poignant and I would urge any woman to read it. Could not recommend this book enough!

  • inspiring story

A very moving story told in a compelling way. It gives real insight into a way of life and despite some terrible experiences for the main characters the reader isn't left depressed but with great respect for their courage.
