Still one of his best - the introduction to the down trodden alcohol ridden street smart Vimes and the pre Kingly Carrot. Great plot, great characters, true Pratchett magic.

Re-finding an old friend
I read this around 25-30 years and since I don't dispose books, I guess I must have borrowed it then. I read it on the back of the recently aired BBC series. That was excellent but still undersells the story. I had forgotten how many fantastic ideals Pratchett squeezes into a story. Now to revisit the rest of the Discworld series.

Re-reading this book as I'd lost my original copy and it's, as usual, a pleasure. It's Vimes in his still permanently drunken, pre Sybil days and you can see how far Terry has brought cynical character along - along with how much the whole Night Watch has developed too. Plus introducing the 6ft 6ins dwarf.... Carrot. I have read this book over and over, the spine has failed and pages have been lost around the house, so I've treated myself to a new one. It's in great condition now, and will probably outlast me. And if it doesn't then I know where to find a replacement
