About this product

Product Information

Meursault leads an unremarkable, bachelor life in Algiers. But his sudden involvement in a violent confrontation throws him into turmoil as he is forced to question the fundamental values of society. Camus creates a world without a God but a societythat is still subject to restrictive, man-made rules capable of alienating any who transcend them. In this most memorable of existential novels, Camus pits the lone and courageous individual against the benign indifference of the universe. Meursault's deception perfectly reflects the absurdity of life.

  • Great book, loved it.

Camus writes with a despondent satire that is rarely seen outside of the realm of existential French madmen. Strangely diassociative from the events going around him, bar the death of his mother, we follow the protagonist through his journey of loss and love - if you could claim to find either of those things in the plot.

  • An essential read.

This classic novel explores our darkest thoughts and our true emotions as opposed to the mask that we assume for the outside world.Do we all simply play the game that society expects us to play from childhood through to adulthood?I could empathise with the main characters feelings of being on the outside looking in.For those of us who are not members of the 'popular crowd'there would be a feeling of understanding. To the final paragraph of his life this man adhered to his true self-how many of us can truly say that?A recommended read for all of us evoking a powerful mix of emotions.
