    Good book!

Really enjoyed this book and read it in a week-always a good sign. Describes the build up and walk to base camp (no easy task) and the climb itself. Tragic consequences and one of the themes is that Everest climbs are more accessable to the wealthy as opposed to experienced climbers.

  • Totally absorbing.

John Krakauer gives a first-hand account of the terrible tragedy on Everest in May 1996, where eight climbers died in one day. This total included guides, clients and experienced climbers. It re-iterates the point that there is no safe way of climbing Everest. If a storm rages when you are up there in the death zone, then you are in serious trouble, guide or no guide. This is a very well written and moving account of the events, which includes that of Beck Weathers who 'died' in the night and came back to life the next morning, suffering from terrible frostbite. It also shows how commercialised the romantic idea of scaling Everest has become. I recommend it to both climbers and non-climbers.

  • A totally humbling read

My goodness this is a powerful read. The bravery and determination of the climbers is absolutely amazing. The trials and severe conditions, I'm amazed any of them successfully climbed to the sumnit of everest. Take a bow all of you and R. I. P the men and women who perished.

  • Good book

Avery interesting true story. The huge problems that this mountain seems to create for climbers seem too hard to tackle and often ends with the deaths of these intrepid souls. Some 200 of them lie up there ,amazing.

  • Great writer who was there.

Gripping real life drama and tragedy after watching the film just had to read the book.
