About this product

Product Information

Inspiring tale of a shepherd's single-handed regeneration of a landscape. The story - both parable and manual - opposes the tree planter, the earth-husband, to the makers of war. At the same time it shows us all that is best in man's relationship with nature, and with his fellow man.

  • A fable for our times

A short story expressing an environmentalist's ideal; where a man plants trees and transforms the barren landscape in which he lives, leading to improvement of the environment and the lives of those who live there. A short book which will appeal to all ages, beautifully illustrated.

  • Simple and yet profound this book should be a part of anyone's library.

Where to start with this tale that totally enriches the human spirit. It's the story of a humble provencal peasant, Elzeard Bouffier and his simple, yet almost God like effect on the landscape around him. A man's generosity to nature and through nature to other human beings, belongs among the most moving and endearing statements of hope. It has given me so much joy, comfort and hope to read and reread this Jean Giono story of a simple man who quite simply grew happiness. At once simple and yet profound this book should be a part of anyone's personal library of treasured books. If at all possible buy an edition with wood engravings - it adds to the experience immeasurably. Also look at the award winning animated film that catches the essence perfectly
