      a modern classic

      I first read this book in the early 1980s on loan. It kept recurring either in my mind or spotted in the occasional bookshop and finally I decided to buy it and read it again. There are few books I have re-read and this is one that has proved to be worthwhile. It's funny, disturbing and hard to put down. If you like a surreal tinge to your reading then you might like this.

      Pulitizer Prize winner, Penguin Classic must read. Prize winners usual a death nail to a book.

      Billy Connelly favourite book but did not rock my sense of humour. I love comedy in all its forms but this did not tickle my taste buds. Was it funny in its day, I am old enough to say 'No' in my case. I have also failed to find a book which is really funny but open to suggestion. I like a laugh.

      title does not sell the book but when you have read just some of it the title fits like a glove
