About this product

Product Information

The Sunday Times No.1 bestseller that triggered a cultural phenomenon ** THE SUNDAY TIMES NO. 1 BESTSELLER ** Go back to where it all began with the dystopian novel behind the award-winning TV series. 'As relevant today as it was when Atwood wrote it' Guardian I believe in the resistance as I believe there can be no light without shadow; or rather, no shadow unless there is also light. Offred is a Handmaid in The Republic of Gilead, a religious totalitarian state in what was formerly known as the United States. She is placed in the household of The Commander, Fred Waterford - her assigned name, Offred, means 'of Fred'. She has only one function- to breed. If Offred refuses to enter into sexual servitude to repopulate a devastated world, she will be hanged. Yet even a repressive state cannot eradicate hope and desire. As she recalls her pre-revolution life in flashbacks, Offred must navigate through the terrifying landscape of torture and persecution in the present day, and between two men upon which her future hangs. Masterfully conceived and executed, this haunting vision of the future places Margaret Atwood at the forefront of dystopian fiction. 'A fantastic, chilling story. And so powerfully feminist', Bernardine Evaristo, author of Girl, Woman, Other.

    Easy read and very enjoyable!

I am a very slow reader but found this book easy to get through. It has plenty of interesting themes running through it, good character development and a very unique plot-line that kept me interested.

  • Most critical review

    Hard work!

What detracted from the story was the total lack of punctuation. This meant that I often had to re-read passages once it became apparent that what I was reading was dialogue. The story itself was interesting; the way it was told - not great.

  • A chilling, witty, sharp narrative

Atwood created a very human, recognisable character. The flashbacks to her previous life bring home the horror of the way life changed and losses and indignities she had to endure. She makes a dystopian existence frighteningly tangible. a very compelling read.

  • The Handmaids Tale

I had never heard of this book before, or 1984! But felt compelled to read it as I believe the content is becoming more relevant than you think. Reading the tale of one persons account of a totalitarian and patriarchal regime that inflicts pain and suffering on people who do not conform with total disregard for humanity. I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

  • The Handmaid’s Tale

I enjoyed reading this book and found it quite compelling. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that I do love a happy ending and this book left too many question marks for my liking.
