Dead Ringer Means Bette Davis Twice!
Bette Davis was in her mid 50's when she played in this movie in the 1960's. She felt that she had seen her best days as an actress. So when she was given this role about twins--one of whom murders the other, she snapped it up. She does not disappoint. It seems that the rich twin, Margaret De Lorca, had stolen the boyfriend of the poor twin, Edith, when they were young because she claimed to be pregnant. When Frank De Lorca, the husband, dies, Edith goes to the funeral and learns of the deception because no baby was ever born and no miscarriage either. Thus, Edith, the poor twin, murders Margaret, the rich twin, and takes her place in the family home--a castle with servants, a tennis court, and a golf course. The servants are aghast when the family golden retriever ... Bette Davis was in her mid 50's when she played in this movie in the 1960's. She felt that she had seen her best days as an actress. All goes reasonably well until we find out that Margaret was committing adultery with Tony Collins (Peter Lawford). Tony finally figures out what is going on and blackmails the new matriarch. But the golden retriever finally kills Tony in a grisly attack. (Dog lovers will be aghast when this scene plays out!) Karl Malden plays Detective Jim Hobbson, the detective who finally arrests the new matriarch for the murder of her deceased husband because he does not know of the switch. It seems that Margaret, besides committing adultery, also was slowly poisoning her husband with arsenic. Ironically, Jim was also Edith's loyal boyfriend, who thinks that she died as a suicide. How this movie ends I will not tell you. But what happens is not disappointing. You will feel good about the movie and want to see it again and again to see how the director convincingly portrayed Bette in the same scene as two people. Remember, this movie was made before we had all the computer magic that we have now. The directors had a problem in naming this movie. The best title would have been "A Stolen Life," but Bette Davis had already made a movie of that name in the early 1950s with Glenn Ford. Thus, they honed in on what is now "Dead Ringer."

Playing a twin once again was no stretch for this lady of film. She devours both characters with delight. Not a huge box office hit, but it was during the time of her comeback to a new audience . "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane," and "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" brought her back.
