This is a readable biography of a fascinating lady. As a first time passenger on an eighteenth century sailing ship en route to Europe she was appalled at the uncleanliness of the food and accommodations. She immediately took responsibility for cleaning up the galley and taught the ship's cook a considerably higher standard of food preparation, led the cleaning if the ship, and then proceeded to learn the terminology of ships of sail and the use of each element of the technology. She was the devoted partner of our second President, very much involved with his political career. She was also the mother of another president, though she did not live long enough to see that. . The writing is only slightly affected by the author's extended exposure to leftist thinking, so that she does misunderstand several features of Abigail Adams's life. These misunderstandings do not get in the way, so that the reader may get a good look at this remarkable woman.Read full review
