  • Soot and whitewash classic.

Another( old hat now) genius collaboration between the Cohen's and Thornton on DVD. Clear picture, no phase- outs. Could watch it over and over again. Never buy new. Great product....Paul....

  • Masterful cinema, with a hint of Tony Shaloub...

The Coen Brothers at their finest and a perfect slice of Noir Cinema. Telling the story at a smooth and perfect pace, this is a masterpiece of film making. Moody lighting, subtle CG and a well picked score all complement the experience perfectly. Some people may find this slow going, but it should be fairly obvious not to expect guns blazing and such. One of the finest things is the usage of Beethoven's 'pathetique' composition, which i think is the second movement of the moonlight sonata - this gives a calm and gentle feel to the otherwise dark nature of the film. Billy Bob Thornton is perfectly cast in his role and the Coen Brothers usual quirks make for an extremely memorable film. The perphiral role of a top-dog lawyer is filled by Tony Shaloub (To be fair this is hardly worth ...

  • The Man Who Wasn't There

A great homage to the fim noir genre. Most of the action seems to be portrayed through Billy Bob Thornton's laconic body language and range of facial expressions. A typical Coen Brothers clever story about a small town barber who gets caught up in a con trick involving blackmail and murder. There are good twists and although slow paced, the story is well crafted and unfolds with precision. Filmed in black and white and with Beethoven providing the haunting soundtrack, its a must see for fans of Coen Brothers films and has a wonderful array of supporting cast actors - many of whom are Coen regulars. Intruiging, clever and beautifully directed, the film captures 1950's small town America, where beneath the surface, all is not as it seems.
