I first read this book when I was in the hospital and I was dying for a great book to read and boy was it delivered by a very sweet friend who knows his books! If you've seen the movie Perfume it doesn't do justice to the book! Quite simply Perfume is a story about a child that was abandoned as a baby in 18th Century Paris. He was passed over to monks as a charity case and somewhere along the line his smelling became the way many of us who have babies understand a major form of communication. And then later, his smelling became the demise of all those that did him wrong. Somewhere along the line in this man's life, the reader will follow closely and somehow sympathize with his serial-killing! That's a new one other than Dexter, for me! He becomes very good at what he does and he becomes a perfume maker and he's able to make complex fragrances that those who studied fragrances their entire lives couldn't capture when this one man was able to do so by just catching a faint whiff of something, anything. Since he did have such a strange upbringing and was rather bashful he gets obsessed one day with the scent of a beautiful young woman on the brink of "womanhood". He wants to capture her essence and ultimately make the ultimate perfume leaving him to murder so then the reader is caught up in a rising storm of terror wondering what will he do next as he perfects his methods. Well he get caught? Will he make a mistake will he stop? As he starts to become more accepted by Society because of the things he learns and is able to create for others a fragrance extraordinaire one wonders that perhaps his inners soul will change. Instead we find out that he becomes absolutely obsessed with capturing the pheromones from the most beautiful essences he has smelled from a young lady. He knows that mankind is moved by fragrance and scent and that the very being of our attraction to each other is due to our various pheromones that we emit from one another and to one another. In other words disturbingly he seems to understand man better than man understands man and ultimately he's able to use the very thing that he was being condemned for doing upon man and show me in for what man really is and capable of doing. In all, the book Perfume is an extremely good read the type of book that you can easily read in one sitting because you'll be wanting to know what's happening next? I'm actually buying this book for my father who has great taste in books and I read it myself like I said in the hospital and and I've reread it before as well! 💯 Read full review
