Steinbeck Travels with Charley
"Travels with charley" is the last work written by the American author John Steinbeck. It is a marvelous account of his trip in a camper with his dog Charley. It is fun to read his impressions of different parts our our country at that time in our history. The paperback copy that I received is easy to hold with a great photograph on the cover.

This book is a good view of America as it was before it started its slide down the slippery slope at the bottom of which it sits today. If the politicians weren't really respectable and honest, at least they told respectable lies. The media pretty much ( usually ) sort of tried to tell the truth. It was said then that if you wanted to bribe a journalist, you'd better have a lot of money. That was before Joe Kennedy showed up. I can't say if America was really a Christian nation then, but it thought it was, and it was free to think what it pleased, and even say so then. Things were different. This edition is different from most. It has an additional chapter devoted to the Inauguration of John F. Kennedy. It was the first ( and last ) inauguration I ever watched on TV. The whole class went to the town hall ( built by the WPA ) and watched a grainy black and white TV set up on a cart. Of course it was black and white. Steinbeck had something as a writer, and I don't know what. He could reach through the English language and give you a memory or a vision as clear as if it were your own. He has somehow kept that bright snowy day so long ago for me, and handed it back. Then hope and optimism seemed to be one and the same with destiny. No more. Some defunct journalist is going around peddling a zine expose' purporting to show that Steinbeck faked some of the book. Which would be a solid case if, after a half a century, none of his sources' memories have slipped. I suspect that some narrative license was taken here and there, but to throw the whole tale into suspicion is hardly warranted I think. The America he presents is by no means all nice and pretty, but a lot of it was, and for those who never knew it then, it is worth reading. Some note should be made of this particular edition. Every year Westvaco ( nee' West Virginia Pulp & Paper ) would publish a book which would be a tour de force of the bookbinder's art which it would then distribute to its important customers. This is one of those books. It is a boxed edition and the design of the book is creative and flawlessly executed. If you want a single copy of "Travels With Charley", this would be a respectable choice.
