About this product

Product Information

A child's bones are discovered near the site of a pre-historic henge on the north Norfolk coast, and the police ask local forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway to date them. Are these the remains of a local girl who disappeared ten years ago? DCI Harry Nelson refuses to give up the hunt for this missing child. Ever since she vanished, someone has been sending him bizarre anonymous notes about ritual sacrifice, quoting Shakespeare and the Bible. He knows Ruth's instincts and experience can help him finally put this case to rest. Then a second child goes missing, and Ruth finds herself in danger from a killer who knows she's getting ever closer to the truth...

So pleased to have found this Author

An excellent story with an interesting heroine - an archeologist who specialises in bones. Great descriptions of Norfolk scenery and buildings. The other recurring characters are unusual too. I would recommend this author to fans of Ann Cleeves.

    The Crossing Places

I felt it was good for light reading e.g on railway journey or holiday but my first impression was that it was highly unlikely that police would so closely involve an archeologist in a murder enquiry. Believable for identifying ancient bones but not subsequently part of the police investigation and all the subsequent ramifications. I also thought there were too many dramas immediately following on from one another. I have probably read too many Jack Reacher books where there are a few breathers in between!

  • Crime, mystery, archeology and passion mixed into a wonderful story!

This is the first book by Elly Griffiths featuring the main character Ruth Galloway an archeologist living in Norfolk. She is called in to assist the police when they discover a body and her her life takes a dramatic turn involving murder and kidnap plots, pagan mystery, betrayal and a bit of lust thrown in for good measure. I couldn't out it down, it is an easy read with all the archealogical terms explained thanks to detective Nelson knowing nothing about archealogy and having to have all things defined for him! Probably more a read for the ladies and anyone who enjoys a crime story with some puzzle solving would like it. I bought books 2, 3, and 4 straight after I was finished with this one and am avidly awaiting the new title due out Jan 2013. Brilliant!

  • A great read

For a first novel there is some predictability in the narrative structure and it was too easy to guess whodunnit, but this is a well-written rollicking read set amid the haunting salt marshes of Norfolk. I have high hopes that the later books will be more difficult to unpack. I’ve already ordered No2.

  • Atmospheric read

First Elle Griffiths book I have read and enjoyed very much so much so that I have bought another one. Involving Dr Ruth Galloway
