  • An excellent insight into the world of French resistance during WW2.

I live in central France, and found the French version of this book at a flea market. The book looked interesting, however, as my French is not that good, I decided to buy the English version. Before reading this book I had a very black and white view of the French resistance during WW2. I assumed they all Marquis had the same aims and that only the Germans were responsible for attrocities, but Max Hastings provides an excellent insight into what the real situation was. I live in an area of France in which there was much Marquis activity, and I feel that I can now appreciate much better what it might have been like to have lived here during those dark days of war.
