Interesting film from "All about Eve" director.
There's the director, there's the cast and there's the production style of the era. And then, there is the way the story comes out, passing through all these combined assets. And it comes out very well. The comparison with "All about Eve" must not be too stressed, however, because, hélas, master pieces don't come by the dozen. The most outstanding common factor to the two films being perhaps how the word carries the story and - even more so in "All about Eve" - how the word is almost the whole story. But "A Letter to Three Wives" and "All about Eve" are also examples of the difference that do exist between the verbs "to talk" and "to say" (a subtlety sadly forgotten in the Portuguese spoken in Brazil).There's the director, there's the cast and there's the production style of the era. What a wonderful movie - and what a shame it is not better known. Three friends on a trip together get a letter from the town strumpet saying she has run off with the husband of one of them: but she doesn't say which. In a sometimes hilarious series of flashbacks we see the ups and downs of all three marriages and try and guess which hubby has done a runner. Powerhouse cast includes Linda Darnell, Jeanne Crain, Ann Sothern, Kirk Douglas and scene-stealer Thelma Ritter as a feisty housekeeper. Joseph L. Mankiewicz won two Oscars - best director and best screenplay - for this unmissable treat.
