Ultimate CD for anyone wanting to discover Petula Clark
I adore Petula Clark, the biggest selling British Female artists of all time (Guinness Book of records states this - not me). She has a first best seller in Australia in 1949 and as recently as 2009 had a chart album here which included some new recordings. She has starred globally from Las Vegas (as recently as this year) , The West End, Sydney opera House ...virtually everywhere and has made 30 odd films on the way. Nearly 200 of her recordings were hits somewhere. To fins a CD of her best work representing alkl she does is wonderful It starts with I WILL FOLLOW HIM ,written under a pseudonym for Petula by Paul Mauriat. It was a global hit making No 1 in every country in the world except the USA and UK . It was recorded in many languages as CHARIOT (a minor UK hit in French ) SUL MIO ... I adore Petula Clark, the biggest selling British Female artists of all time (Guinness Book of records states this - not me). Then there is Tony Hatch's classic CALL ME (never a Clark single)1st release on the I KNOW A PLACE album). YOU'RE THE ONE , a hit in the UK for Clark and a monster hit in the States by The Vogues has a tune written by Clark. YOU'D BETTER COME HOME is back to Mr Hatch and has an almost Spector sound Lvely song A hit in the States. EVERY LITTLE BIT HURTS shows Petula as not only a fine song stylist, and chooser great songs. Brenda Holloway's original is perfection but this is a soulful and sensitive reading a joy HEART takes you back to Petula the composer and a real rollicking joy of a rock song. Petula and rock you say? Listen to it . YOU CAN'T KEEP ME FROM LOVING YOU is from a session with magnificent string arranged by the great Johnny Harris (now big noise at Disney). WE CAN WORK IT OUT , much has been made of her friendship with John Lennon and the advice he gave her. This is one of many Beatles renditions and comes from what many consider her musical masterwork the MY LOVE album. When the Times did their 1,000 musicians of all time one of the reasons Petula was selected alongside Debussy and Vivaldi was her place as one of the greatest interpreters of Beatles songs. A GROOVY KIND OF LOVE is a strong vocal - so different from the dreamy Mindbenders hit. It is so impressive that it was lifted in Zimbabwe and South Africa as a single and was one of her biggest smash hits over there.A rare case of a cover being better than the original. DON'T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY has the great lyricist Jackie Trent on board and is a classic hit. THIS IS MY SONG had Charlie Chaplin write a beautiful ballad for his friend and neighbour petula . Happy together - Petula worked with the writers and this is a lovely cover of a great pop tune Let it Be Me showcases the song stylist with a Sonny Burke arrangement YOU AND I is the hit song from her film GOODBYE MT CHIPS and written by her friend Leslie Bricusse GAMES PEOPLE PLAY a fantastic version of a great song I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM , recorded before the show was out and the very first time anyone charted with a Lloyd Webber song Petula later wowed the world as Norma Desmond. Then a return to McCarney now with Ahmet Ertgun producing with spectacular results. Check out the rest of her catalogue

Great CD from a great Singer!
For those who can appreciate a sublime voice, you can not go wrong with this CD. Petula's version of the Beatles "We can work it out"is a nice gentle production.As well as several other covers from the sixties all with her lovely vocal signature.All this and of course her own tracks such as the famous "Downtown"and my personal favourite "Don't sleep in the subway"makes for great CD.

Petula is a great artiste, I loved listening to her back in the 60's. I found this CD to have a great feel good factor. I have added "The Essential" CD to my "listen when I am by my self" list- when I sing my heart out and have a trip down the old memory lane.
