About this product

Product Information

As recommended by Meghan Markle as the one book she can't wait to share with her child - the timeless fable about the gift of love Once there was a little tree ... and she loved a little boy. So begins the classic bestseller, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk ... and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

      Which layer have you read?

The edition I have has black and white line drawings and could be used as a meditative colouring book. For such an apparently simple book it has multiple layers. It is a simple story of a child growing. It could be used to reflect on different types of love e.g. the giving love and the need love. It is an environmental tale of what happens when destructive tendencies prevail. There are 7 blank sides of paper at the end of my copy which leads me to the possibility of writing after the words “the end” “… of the beginning”. Trees will normally send up suckers from their roots , so why not use these pages to write what happens as that begins. A book of fascinating possibilities, I have read of people throwing this book out after one reading, please don’t. (Apart from the environmental ...

    • Contrasting

I bought this book because reviews online said it teaches children values of money/unconditional love. There’s 2 ways to interpret this book; The first is unconditional from who I interpret to be Mother Nature who gives everything she has to a little boy. The second is I suppose abusing the person who loves you. The little boy only comes back to the tree when he needs something.
