About this product

Product Information

Imperial fortunes are at a low ebb in wartime India. Defeated in Malaya and Burma, and facing Japanese invasion, the British are also opposed by the Indian people. Against this background of two nations in violent opposition, the rape of an English girl is a prelude to riots, strikes and uprisings.

    • An Epic reflection of the last days of the British Raj

Part of the Raj quartet and the first of four books. It is even more detailed and colourful than the wonderful 12 hour ITV production made in the 1980's with Peggy Ashcroft. It's a shame Paul Scott didn't get the full recognition he deserved for this Epic work before his death. He lived in relative poverty and it was only after his death that this superb work was truly recognised. It is not only a superbly written piece of fiction, but it is interspersed with very accurate historical details of the last days of the British Raj.
