About this product

Product Information

The defining moment of the Vietnam war when the American dream of a quick victory died - hard. Vietnam. November 1965. 450 men of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, are dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley and immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion is chopped to pieces in a similarly brutal manner. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constitute one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War and set the tone of the conflict to come. Now a major motion picture starring Mel Gibson

  • An interesting read.

An interesting read as to the strategies employed by the Air Cavalry and the response by North Vietnamese Regulars in the Vietnam War. The harsh brutality of war is much to the fore as one can expect but full kudos to the American Commander who took the time in researching this book. His compassion and consideration for his men and their families is to be commended.

  • Super read. We were soldiers...

Excellent book. I have rewad it twice now. My original copy was lost in a fire. It fits well into my library. One of the most compelling books of Vietnam and its conflict. Film was good, but the books fills in the gaps. Being a cornish man it also tells the story of the only cornish man to be a la Drang, Rick Rescorla, who survived all this only to die saving lives at the Twin Towers. I would recommend this to anyone interested in Vietnam.

  • Excellent book!!

Enthralling book from start to finish, takes you right into the heart of the battle and keeps you gripped and on edge page after page. Highly recommend giving this a read. Really makes you think about what the poor guys went through. Massive respect to all that were involved.

  • We Were Soldiers book, good book, good condition

Have not finished the book yet but it is a great read about real events in an horrific war. The story is from both sides which is quite unique in non fiction books. The book arrived in good time and is in good condition.

  • A picture of a battle from both sides.

Great true story, gripping. You just don't know why the commanders at fault were not court martialed.
