Two features. In Hollywood, screenwriting failures are so common that bars in the city are strewn with down-on-their-luck writers drowning their sorrows over broken dreams. Documentary filmmakers Mark Brian Smith and Tony Montana begin their movie OVERNIGHT in such an establishment - a Hollywood bar called J. Sloan's. OVERNIGHT focuses on 25-year-old J.Sloan's bartender Troy Duffy, whose movie script, THE BOONDOCK SAINTS, has been picked up by Harvey Weinstein at Miramax. Weinstein is so impressed by the confident, self-assured Duffy that he gives him the go-ahead not only to direct his own movie, but also to score the soundtrack with his own band, The Brood. To Duffy's delight, Weinstein also buys the bar, making them co-owners. Propelled to A-list status, stars such as Mark Wahlberg and Matthew Modine start hanging out with Duffy at J. Sloan's. But as his ego spirals out of control, the interest from Miramax ends as abruptly as it started. No one at the company returns his calls, and with Duffy floundering in a sea of recriminations between himself and the friends he brought along for the ride, the movie is promptly dropped by Weinstein. In the end, THE BOONDOCK SAINTS does end up getting made. But with a low budget and minimal distribution, it disappears without a trace. The future for Duffy appears uncertain at the end of OVERNIGHT and J. Sloan's closes down as the credits roll. Duffy is reduced to a solitary figure whose blame for his misfortune rests somewhere between the fickle wiles of the film industry, and his own personal shortcomings. In an all-too-brief interview featured on the DVD, co-director Mark Brian Smith says that Duffy, a “tough-guy bartender and bouncer”, had “all the dice in a row to be the next Quentin Tarantino.” If your response to being in that position would be wary, take heart: you aren’t dragging the ball-and-chain ego of Duffy, a dungareed motormouth whose first script netted him the nefarious attentions of Miramax’s head honch, Harvey Weinstein. In 1997, Weinstein offered Duffy some real rare moolah: a $300,000-plus deal to buy the tyro’s script, The Boondock Saints, hire him to direct – and have his band, The Brood, provide the soundtrack. Oh, and Harv also offered to join Duffy in the bar business. Our man isn’t joyous or panicked by this. He’s smug. He thinks it’s his “destiny”. All the trade papers cook him up as the new feast in Tinseltown – and he happily flings himself on the slab, like a big, beardy lamb to the carving knife, hiring Montana and Smith to document his glory on film. But the story goes another way. Duffy becomes, in Smith’s words, “somebody that we were actually very disturbed by.” Indeed, everyone seems to become disturbed by the lairy loudmouth. Duffy wastes no time in alienating friends, family, bandmates and even Weinstein; a man not known for his gentle, forgiving touch. As Harvey hovers in the background (only appearing once), The Brood’s album stiffs. Boondock flops. And we leave Troy, who has naturally squandered his dough, back where he began – now freshly armed for his own protection. Is the film a hatchet job by disgruntled former friends? Well, Montana reckons that, “If this was a revenge piece, the things that we decided not to put in the film would have been put in the film.” Sounds like publicity blather and, sadly, we don’t see much extra evidence in the meagre deleted scenes. But the main feature’s focus on Duffy’s self-enforced decline is rough enough. The inclusion of Boondock in this release doesn’t help him. It’s a welcome extra – the perfect double-bill. But, Willem Dafoe aside, it’s a howling mess: a crime drama that mirrors Duffy in its brutish violence, volume and unwillingness to justify its obnoxiousness. Overnight isn’t just entertainingly embarrassing. It’s a riches-to-rags tale that nails fame as a dubious, double-edged fix. The hope and hype doesn’t ‘change’ Duffy; it exposes him, drawing out his dark side. And in our fame-fixated culture, Overnight is as contemporary as it is car-crash cautionary.

A cracking combination of true life woes and breath taking action. The first story is a real life diary of a guy trying to get a script made, his success and then losing it all! The main event is the story he was trying to get on screen. A great protrail of bortherly love, and kick butt action. Follows two brothers on their vigilante quest to rid Boston of ALL sinners, starting with gangsters, drug dealer and alike. Along the way they get recogonition and help from unlikey sources. I'll stop it there and say, WATCH IT! You'll not be disappointed I assure you!A cracking combination of true life woes and breath taking action. Must have for any DVD collection.
Great Movie by a disturbed character! Having seen the film before buying the dvd, I was surprised to see the creator of the film being so protective. 'Overnight' shows the creator and director of the film in his true colours. The Boondock Saints shouldve made box office history!

Fantastic film
I had seen this film a couple of times before purchasing my own copy, kinda the reason why I wanted my own copy. I dont know why they never put this film on at the cinema. Fantastic film, worth watching over and over again. Nothing to dislike in this film. If you dont like swearing or violence then it is not a film for you. Otherwise its the best film you would have ever watched in the 21st century.I had seen this film a couple of times before purchasing my own copy, kinda the reason why I wanted my own copy. One of the best films i have ever seen. Its got crooks, guns and irish hitmen all in one film with a religous background. Remember god told me to!!!
