About this product

Product Information

More than any other writer Gilbert White (1720-93) has shaped the relationship between man and nature. A hundred years before Darwin, White realised the crucial role of worms in the formation of soil and understood the significance of territory and song in birds. His precise, scrupulously honest and unaffectedly witty observations led him to interpret animals' behaviour in a unique manner. This collection of his letters to the explorer and naturalist Daines Barrington and the eminent zoologist Thomas Pennant - White's intellectual lifelines from his country-village home - are a beautifully written, detailed evocation of the lives of the flora and fauna of eighteenth-century England.

    • A work of genius from our dear friend, Gilbert White

There is not much more can be said about this marvellous pioneering work of genius from Gilbert White. Similar to Izaak Walton's 'Compleat Angler',this book is not only educational but absolutely timeless. His diary style is easy to read and offers the perfect insight into the rural life of the 18th century. Readers may want to visit Selborne, Hampshire to experience the wonderful restored gardens and house and the authentic period tea room. While White was recording his work, just a handful of miles away the men of Hambledon were establishing club cricket as we know it today. What a time and place to be! For the price of half a bitter this book can be purchased through the modern medium of e bay. Something White would no doubt be fascinated by.
