Forget everything you might have heard or read about the Sex Pistols. This is THE documentary. A warts and all look inside the lives of a band that changed the face of music and popular culture forever. This rockumentary tells the story using new interviews with the band and a lot of Temple's own 1970's 'never before seen' home video tapes - possibly outtakes from the film Temple made with the Pistols "The Great Rock n Roll Swindle". The film starts by taking us back to 1970s Britain when unemployment was increasing at an alarming rate, the streets thick with rubbish because the binmen were on strike, the three day week and less than ten hours of TV a day. Using news footage, TV shows of the time and clips of Lawrence Olivier playing Richard the Third, the viewer is immensed in all that ... Forget everything you might have heard or read about the Sex Pistols. This is THE documentary. A warts and all look inside the lives of a band that changed the face of music and popular culture forever. This rockumentary tells the story using new interviews with the band and a lot of Temple's own 1970's 'never before seen' home video tapes - possibly outtakes from the film Temple made with the Pistols "The Great Rock n Roll Swindle". The documentary then takes us through the lengthy up-and-down story of the band from their humble beginnings in Shepherd's Bush to their disintegration at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. Unlike previous punk documentaries, Malcom McClaren is cut down to size. We realise he didn't "invent punk" and that the Pistols were not a "projection of his fantasies". But as John Lydon retorts here "I invented me, no one else did." McClaren's boastfulness blows up in his face. He's really made to look stupid, and, whether rightly or wrongly, completely selfish and ruthless. The surviving band members faces are blanked out like those of crime victims on TV (this was rumoured to have been done to avoid spoiling the film by showing old blokes talking about the old days), and there are archive interviews with Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungeon; all of which are revealing, honest and particularly when Johnny Rotten is discussing Sid Vicious' premature death, very moving. This documentary isn't just for punk fans, but for those who are curious about all the fuss and even scholars interested in the sociological view of the punk sub-culture would find this useful.
