BRASIL 500 (From Carnival To Copcabana) Various Artists
A compilation CD from 2000, with an enticing cover of samba girl on the front and Copacabana beach on the reverse. The track listing is diverse, but contains some real hard-to-find gems like the anthemic Gilberto Gil's 'Toda Menina Baiana', and Airto's 'Samba De Flora'. The excellent Paulinho De Costa appears too along with George Duke's 'Brazilian Love Affair', although sadly they are edited versions. Flora Purim does an excellent rendition of 'Agua De Beber', a more jazzy groove than Astrud Gilberto's original. And there are some good ballads here too, from the likes of Elis Regina and Jorge Ben. James Last teams up with Astrud Gilberto for a version of 'I'm Nothing Without You' also. For me, the overall flavour of the compilationn is a good slice of Rio's finest beaches and city life, ...
