About this product

Product Information

The bestselling classic that redefined our view of the relationship between beauty and female identity. In today's world, women have more power, legal recognition, and professional success than ever before. Alongside the evident progress of the women's movement, however, writer and journalist Naomi Wolf is troubled by a different kind of social control, which, she argues, may prove just as restrictive as the traditional image of homemaker and wife. It's the beauty myth, an obsession with physical perfection that traps the modern woman in an endless spiral of hope, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of "the flawless beauty."

  • The Beauty Myth

Although I am female, I am no feminist. I didn't quite grasp who the ubiquitous "they" and "evil men" cited by the author actually were. I don't believe that anyone is trying to keep anyone down on purpose. Survival has always been of the fittest. If women feel the need to up the ante on the work or social ladder, then that's women's deal. I completely disagree with what the author wrote. That being said, the book is well-written even if it's not convincing.

  • It’s amazing. Needed good feminism

It’s awesome! I love the book. Needed some good feminism in my life after seeing a lot of depressing things that worsen my anxiety and depression and suicidal thoughts but I’m doing ok when I see there’s people like me who are for women’s rights equally with men. Thank you so much!

  • This book should be required reading!

What an important book. I needed this book in order to do my research paper for a class I was taking last semester. It was most helpful. Wolf's thought-provoking insights bring to light the way society treats women's bodies, and how women themselves disregard and commodify their own bodies. I believe that every woman should read this book--that mothers should pass this onto their daughters. And sons. And husbands, too. Oh- and I got an A on my paper.
