The early 1950s represented years of transition for London Transport. Following the era of austerity, there was no significant investment coming through in terms of large new orders for vehicles- particularly of the RT and RF type - and as a result of Operation Tramway, the last trams to serve the metropolis were to disappear in July 1952. Other changes saw the last new trolleybuses to enter service in London, the Q1 class, appearing almost simultaneously with the first route conversions. The early 1950s represented a period of considerable optimism for London transport, with passenger levels increasing and with much needed new investment coming to fruition. In this latest book from Ian Allan Publishing, well-known bus photographer and author Philip Wallis recalls the era through a comprehensive selection of contemporary photographs. Detailing, in a factional account of a day in the life of transport enthusiast at the time, the author narrates a journey around London in early 1952, when it was possible to see buses, trams and trolleybuses alongside each other, thus providing the reader with a graphic reminder of the public transport scene in London during the period.
