This was the first release from the Naxos Blu-Ray Audio line, and it's quite an effort. Musically, this will not be to everyone's taste -- it's a symphony for various kinds of brass ensembles, and, like most Corigliano works, incorporates odd metrics, a tremendous dynamic range (from a whisper to a scream, pretty much), and outbreaks of dissonance and martial chaos (literally concluding with a bang, from a musket fired by the conductor.) The aim here is to provide an epic feeling of the Roman arena, and an immersive musical spectacle that leaves no room for complacency in the listener -- I was startled by several passages during the course of this. Fortunately, the producers opted to incorporate "Gazebo Dances" after the symphony, which allows for some decompression and relaxation. The production itself is superb, with a finely balanced mix that makes good use of the rear channels.Read full review
