About this product

Product Information

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse. And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him a mere body in the wardrobe. There are many, many bodies and an ancient crime more terrible than murder. He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon sandwiches, occasionally snookered and out of his mind, but never out of guile. Where there is a crime there must be a finding, there must be a chase and there must be a punishment. They say that in the end all sins are forgiven. But not quite all...

    Funny, laugh out loud

Always fun to read, but this one was also dark & moody. The Butler is a great character. Collecting all the guards books in hardback now.

  • Pratchett becoming darker and more distasteful

Commander Vimes goes into the country with his family to his wifes ancestral home and becomes involved in a murder involving Goblins. Expect lots of stereotypical jokes about landowners and peasantry. As if these people actually exist anymore, the Goblins are a new species that the writer has never used before and without a shadow of a doubt one of the most unpleasant species that the writer has created. As a great admirer of Terry Pratchett this novel was not very enjoyable by the very nature of the Goblins and by commander Vimes becoming more like Inspector Barlow of Z Cars with every moment. (Look up Z cars) Gave the unfinished book to the local age concern shop, Pritchett’s Disc world is becoming more modern and less magical with every book. If the writer wishes to write about the ...

  • The Vimes Family continue to entertain - a must-read for Pratchett fans.

As a fan of Terry Pratchett & the Discworld books I am very happy to report a complete lack of disappointment with this latest instalment of the goings on of the Vimes family. This time the Commander of the Watch is horrified to discover he is going on holiday. To the countryside. & he *will* enjoy it. This is another thought-provoking story this time looking at slavery & a new race barely touched on until now, goblins. Unlike the Orcs seen previously in 'Unseen Academicals' the goblins are an downtrodden race that are so used to being so, that they accept their lack of place in society. They are not to be feared so much as ignored or if not, blamed for all the little things that go wrong. Then one of them is murdered. It is here thankfully that the long arm of the Vimes steps ...

  • Pratchett pulls off another great yarn.

Even when on holiday Vimes cannot get away from crime. If you are a fan of Terry Pratchetts Discworld you'll enjoy this. If if you haven't read much of his work this is a good book.
