  • The Benchmark that all other creators of anime should aim for

Akira is a must for anyone's DVD collection whether your an anime fan or not. Set in a post apocalyptic Tokyo it's a delight to watch and as it's been remastered it looks awesome on a big TV. don't miss out on owning a copy of probably the best anime ever made (wicked city comes a close 2nd)

  • AKIRA

Although I'm hardly an expert on the genre, AKIRA is the Marmite of Anime. It is either viewed as a gratuitous bloodbath or a masterpiece. For me, elements of both are true. Akira is fundamentally a hard-nosed political societal critique, exploring a number of psychological and philosophical themes, such as social unrest and revolution, the nature of corruption, the will to power, psychic awareness and the growth from childhood to maturity both in individuals and the human race itself. For some, maybe there is a lot of gratuitous violence and blood, this film is definitely not for the faint hearted! • Akira

I bought this as part of my dissertation research. I am not a particular fan of graphic novels so I found the storyline a bit slow, but the attention to detail was amazing, and the soundtrack was well worth attention, with interesting fusions between modern and traditional world musics and fresh use of music technology, underscoring the technology - obsessed world of the film very effectively. The length is a little over the top I think, but if you're a fan of the book version I got the feeling it left out more than stayed in. However, if you're not a fan of cartoons or world music fusion, I wouldn't recommend this film...it gets quite tedious and depressing towards the end. Having said that, there are great moments, and at some points I found myself entering entirely into the setting ...
