Synopsis
Jeannette Walls's The Glass Castle was "nothing short of spectacular" ( Entertainment Weekly ). Now she brings us the story of her grandmother -- told in a voice so authentic and compelling that the book is destined to become an instant classic. " Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did ." So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, in Jeannette Walls's magnificent, true-life novel based on her no-nonsense, resourceful, hard working, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town -- riding five hundred miles on her pony, all alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car ("I loved cars even more than I loved horses. They didn't need to be fed if they weren't working, and they didn't leave big piles of manure all over the place") and fly a plane, and, with her husband, ran a vast ranch in Arizona. She raised two children, one of whom is Jeannette's memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, unforgettably portrayed in The Glass Castle . Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds -- against women, Native Americans, and anyone else who didn't fit the mold. Half Broke Horses is Laura Ingalls Wilder for adults, as riveting and dramatic as Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa or Beryl Markham's West with the Night . It will transfix readers everywhere.

Half Broke Horses - symbolizes the wild west.

I live in Arizona. This book is about a lady rancher whose holdings were around what is now Seligman and Peach Springs, in northern Arizona. It's a true story. I found it to be very interesting to read how things were back in the early 1900's. The main fight at that time was (and still is) for water. The author, Jeannette Walls, is the subject's grand daughter. She has written several books and is a contributor to the Today Show.

  • Most critical review

    Terrible copy of this book.

I Haven't had the chance to read the book as yet BUT-I do have a complaint. The entire book is covered in large writing in bright red ink. Why someone reading a book feels it necessary to write all over it is beyond me. I know the ad says there may be notes in the book but this is beyond notes. Every page is written in. I think I may have to find another copy. This much writing in a book is really distracting. I enjoy reading and this may be a great book, but not this copy.

  • Physical Condition Great, Liked the story

I bought this as a used book. I thought the physical condition was better than described. Always good to have the condition better than expected. I enjoyed the story very much. I liked the line where they were going to get an indoor toilet and someone said, Isn't that unsanitary? Who would want a crapper in their house?

  • Reality and good reading

I like reality stories and this is a taste of life in the west like you don't often hear ,even if you live in the very place it happened. . I had read Crystal Castle before and wish I had read this first.

  • Half Broke Horses

I loved "The Glass Castle" and have thoroughly enjoyed this book, whose content is based on events that preceded 'Glass Castle'. This author has a very unique way of writing that pulls the reader into the story.
