About this product

Product Information

Years in insurance and marriage to the joyless Hilda have been no more than death in life to George Bowling. This and fear of another war take his mind back to the peace of his childhood in a small country town. But his return journey to Lower Binfield brings complete disillusionment.

  • Quality reading, great condition

Never heard of this novel and I'm really getting into it, putting it in context of his other works. Orwell is always readable and thought-provoking, often compelling. The book is very good condition and quality and the price excellent!

  • Beautifully written and very funny

I had never heard of this novel and it has come as a really pleasant surprise. I have been falling about laughing and that is something I would never have expected from Orwell. His writing is at once rich and simple and this is a wonderfully intimate look at the life of one middle class man in a London that's heading for war. His reaction to visiting a milk bar will resonate with anyone who hasn't enjoyed a fast food outlet in 21st Century London. This is a gloriously real description of 1930s England which rather corrects the impression that everything was like it's depicted in Poirot. This has its points to make, but mostly it is very, very funny.
