In the last two decades, the destruction of the rich fauna of the grasslands, especially in Africa, has been well documented. Many countries and organizations are woking to save what is left of the last wildernesses on Earth. Reserves are being organized to protect farnland and livestock from being damaged. The World Biodiversity Project, set up in 1989, will assemble masses of information and produce plans for most of the world's wilderness landscapes. Ecologists in the US have agreed to set up long-term research projects, designed to monitor whst is happening to the world's ecosystems over 100 years. Each major ecosystem, like the savannas and the prairies, will be monitored both on the ground and from space. It is estimated that, at present, one quarter of all the world's plants and animals are in danger of extinction. If this tragedy is to be avoided, this book encourages everyone to be involved in saving the Earth's living resources. The book highlights the special care and protection that has provided a more secure future for some of the endangered plants, trees, animals, birds and insects of the world.
