I love the tension between these two actors- Bacall was so young and green, yet she seem such a natural in front of the camera. Bogart, was well, Bogart, always a great actor to watch. Movies like this are so refreshing- where the characters interact like mature adults, yet still evince the passions we all feel at one time or another. Walter Brennan was great too, playing a character with a significant weakness, not his usual style. They even gave us a character we love to hate- Dan Seymour, the head of the Vichy collaborators. I bought it because I can enjoy it repeatedly and it is a keeper for this reason. Not a lot of movies make this particular grade.
What a great and exciting film. Bogart is tough as usual. The was Bacall's very first film at nineteen years old. She was so sexy. At their best! The film is based on a Hemingway book with a screen partially written by Faulkner. A Howard Hawks directed film.
