About this product

Product Information

Clarice Cliff is one of the most important and well-known Art Deco ceramic designers in Britain and abroad. Her brightly hand-painted tablewares decorated with stylised landscapes, flowers and a whole range of abstract patterns skilfully applied to art deco shapes took the rather traditional and reserved British pottery market by storm during the late twenties and early thirties. Her Bizarre wares, the name given to her first range, were in such demand that new tea and coffee ware shapes were created for the table alongside vases, face masks and many amusing fancies. This book looks at how Clarice Cliff became so successful through great determination, her intuitive sense of colour and shape and an understanding of what sort of pottery the younger generation wanted in their new homes. This was coupled with her great ability to interpret the latest contemporary patterns and shapes from Europe and adapt the style for the more reserved British market. The popularity of her art deco classics has led to a large international collectors' market which has grown considerably over the last twenty years with specialist auctions and exhibitions dedicated to her life and work which has proved so popular that the prices realised for certain rare and less well-known items has exceed GBP15,000. The main part of the book focuses on collecting Clarice Cliff pottery highlighting the development of her patterns and shapes alongside an extensive price guide that gives the collector full information about actual sales with detailed information on dates and prices realised at reputable auctions. SELLING POINTS: -The definitive price guide to Clarice Cliff featuring actual prices realised at auction -A 'Top Twenty Pattern' list, put together from lists made by several Clarice Cliff collectors is featured, alongside useful information on dates, colour variations and shapes and sets -A unique and full colour 58 page Price Guide featuring over 170 different Clarice Cliff pieces from sales at auction houses in the UK including date of sale, estimate and price realised -Published for the first time important information on the official Clarice Cliff reproductions -A special chapter on the Artist and Industry exhibition focussing on Clarice Cliff's role with information on Dame Laura Knight, Duncan Grant and other artists -A resource file for collectors listing known pattern names, standard back stamps and information on web sites and auction houses are included -Foreword TV presenter and author Eric Knowles -Clarice Cliff has been highlighted on the ABC Collectors show ILLUSTRATIONS 200 colour illustrations *

A problem free purchase, with the book arriving within the delivery estimate, securely packaged, as described and in stated condition. Communication was prompt, friendly, and professional throughout the entire process. I have found this seller to be reliable and offers good value. The book itself was in good condition and was of good quality. I have bought several books from this seller in the past and would not hesitate to do so again.

This seller has been extremely helpful. The booklets/magazines I ordered are personally valuable to me. Part of the positive experience is because the seller has an amazing selection. I hope to be ordering again soon. I appreciated the quality of packaging for the shipping that was used, ensuring safe arrival from the U.K.. Almost all the magazines (56) were better than described. I also appreciate how willing the seller was to work with me, being flexible, and easy to communicate with.
