When I ran Advanced Dungeons and Dragons adventures in the 1980's the characters needed fantastic settings for their later adventures. As they raised in level or sought evil in it's lair they increasingly needed the planes to do so. Before Jeff Grubb's Manual of the Planes the Dungeon Master was largely on his or her own with a few short paragraphs in the Dungeon Master's Guide as their starting point. And weeks of work before them for even the most rudimentary excursion into the planes. This book has new foes, fantastic terrain and features and detailed rules to handle the travel to planes for AD&D characters. My end game adventures grew proportionally more fun as I could focus on the encounters and the architecture of the places they were visiting and not the basic rules of how spells operated or how one moved from place to place on say the Ethereal plane. This is an indispensable book to have after 1987 if you are playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and the characters are interested in expanding their horizons beyond the prime material plane. Now it sees action again as players such as myself wish to recreate those early experiences with AD&D for new friends and children who have yet to experience them, not content to play just the latest rules light game but searching for an experience that was magical to many. AD&D is something that took years to master but is well worth it. Swords and Sorcery gaming is back. Old school is new again and if you are going to play for more than a few outings and intend for your characters to walk more than OEarth, the Manual of the Planes is your guide to ages of adventure and a universe of wonder. Thank you Mr. Grubb for expanding our horizons. - Michael Tenery.Read full review
I am currently playing a 1st ed game and this is an invaluable resource for higher level play. It's an easy-to-follow format and has a ton of resources for every plane listed. Some of this was changed in later editions but this is the original and an excellent resource for both players and DM's. I highly recommend for any D&D enthusiast even if it's just for the nostalgia.
