B is for Bumptious Baboon...please read on!
This is one of the most beautiful alphabet books. I know that is high praise as there are many wonderful authors and illustrators who have created alphabet books. If you are not familiar with the range and beauty of Leonard Baskin's work, please do some research via Google. Here he involves his family to invent lyrical names for animals and insects that you might have even overlooked..."a gangling entangling spider", "a primordial protozoa", "a ghastly garrulous gargoyle" and the "double-breasted yellow jacket." I'm accustomed to seeing Baskin's work much more serious, in black and white lines or woodblock prints. What a pleasure to see these loose playful watercolors with complex colors stretch across the page to convey that "H is for Hosie's Heron." "E The imperious eagle spangled and ... It is this rhythm and play, along with the stunning watercolors throughout the book, that bring me back over and over to open the book and turn each page as if I haven't already read it 40 times.
