A definite 'classic' album.
I'd been searching for this album for, ooh, around 30+ years... First heard as a slightly-muffled cassette recording (remember them?) of a badly scratched LP (ditto), there was still something in that sound that immediately captured your attention and left haunting melodies running around your head for, well, the rest of your life. Having finally tracked down (thanks, eBay) a very rare CD copy of this album, I can at last fully understand what it was that left its mark so long ago; the stunning, inimitable guitar of Albert Lee, the staggering beautiful voice of Tony Colton, and the tight professionalism and imagination of the whole band (yes, that's Chas Hodges - 'Chas & Dave!' on bass...). This is a slightly strange mix of songs. It contains a few examples of superb 'country rock' - ... I'd been searching for this album for, ooh, around 30+ years... This is a slightly strange mix of songs. It contains a few examples of superb 'country rock' - not a genre I'd normally have stepped over a fallen leaf to get close to - and the main highlights of the album, 3 or 4 of the most pure, breath-taking ballads you will ever hear in your life. 'I Wish You Knew Me' (the hairs stand on the back of my neck just typing it's title) is a painful song of lost love. Tony's voice is natural, unforced, and aching with feeling. The production accompanying this is equally beautifully observed - stunning acoustic guitar and haunting backing vocal harmonies. (I now realise what it was that left it's mark on me; THAT voice, and THOSE backing vocals...) 'Delaware' is equally captivating - such 'simple' & evocative lyrics, gentle piano, soaring backing vocals. This is the only 'ballad'-type song from H,H&F I can find on YouTube - the rest being their rockier stuff - so it's worth a listen to get an idea of what this album offers. Wonderful. 'Little Bit Lonely' - another song destined to become a life-long favourite of yours. As soon as you hear it, you'll know why. Breaking up these aching songs is a superb collection of musically-brilliant, wittily-written, thumpingly cracking country/rock/blues songs. You will LOVE them too! What a talent Albert Lee was (still is, I guess!). The rest of the band are equally on-board - this is fabulous music. I can't understand why this album hasn't been re-released - CDs typically sell for £30-40+ when they come on to the 2nd-hand market. Completely unfair for those who should have an opportunity to hear this wonderful music. Looks like I'm one of the few lucky ones...
